Selecting and maintaining plunger pumps
A plunger metering pump moves liquid directly with a reciprocating plunger in a cylinder. The design is relatively simple and reaches high discharge pressures, so it is used for high-pressure injection, boiler feed dosing and chemical process feed.
Because the plunger and packing contact the liquid, slight leakage is possible. For toxic, flammable or highly corrosive liquids, consider a hydraulic diaphragm pump instead.
Selection points include maximum flow and pressure, plunger diameter and stroke, pump speed, liquid temperature and viscosity, packing material and flushing, and motor power and explosion protection. Check packing leakage regularly and adjust or replace it as needed.
