Selecting a mechanical diaphragm pump
A mechanical diaphragm metering pump uses an electric motor, gearbox and eccentric or cam mechanism to move the diaphragm. The diaphragm separates the drive from the pumped liquid, so there is no dynamic seal to leak.
Compared with solenoid pumps they deliver higher flows and suit continuous dosing at low to moderate pressure, for example PAC, PAM and hypochlorite feed in water and wastewater plants or cooling-water treatment. Output is usually set with a manual stroke-length knob, and a VFD motor or electric stroke actuator can be added for automatic control.
Key selection points are maximum flow and discharge pressure, motor supply (single or three phase, explosion-proof or not), diaphragm and head materials such as PVC, PVDF, PTFE or stainless steel, and the viscosity and solids content of the liquid.
