What changes when you need high pressure and high flow

At low flow a high-pressure plunger pump is fairly forgiving. Raise the flow and new problems show up, sometimes more decisive than which of the plunger metering pump brands you chose.

Plunger diameter trades against pressure. On the same drive, a larger plunger moves more per stroke but holds less pressure. Maximum flow and maximum pressure in a catalog rarely sit on the same line, so read the row for the actual plunger size. A relief valve on the discharge is not optional. A plunger pump is positive displacement, so a closed downstream valve sends pressure straight up. At high flow, pulsation is also stronger, so plan the discharge dampener and back pressure valve together or the high-pressure line and instruments will vibrate.
