Swimming Pool Water Management

Automatic pH adjustment and disinfectant dosing with online residual chlorine/pH monitors.

Challenges

Pool and water-park water quality depends on two key values: residual chlorine (or other disinfectant) and pH. Heavy bather load, high temperature and strong sunlight consume chlorine quickly, while quiet periods lead to overdosing. pH outside the proper range reduces the effectiveness of hypochlorous acid and causes eye irritation, odour and corrosion. Manual sampling every few hours cannot keep up with load changes and makes record-keeping for health inspections difficult.

Water parks usually have several pools and features on separate circulation loops, and use hypochlorite, pH correction chemicals and flocculants, so there are many dosing points to manage. Plant rooms are small, and the chlorinated atmosphere is hard on pumps and instruments.

Our Approach

We recommend one online monitoring and automatic dosing set per circulation loop:

1. Monitoring: a residual chlorine transmitter and a pH/ORP transmitter on a sample line from the return. The chlorine sensor sits in a constant-flow cell so readings stay stable. Values are shown locally and sent to the control room by 4–20 mA or fieldbus.

2. Disinfectant dosing: a solenoid diaphragm metering pump adjusts its stroke rate from the chlorine deviation, increasing dose under heavy load and reducing it when the pool is quiet. Heads in PVC or PVDF with degassing valves suit hypochlorite.

3. pH correction: a second pump doses acid or alkali against the pH reading, keeping pH in range for effective disinfection and bather comfort.

4. Flocculation: on sand-filter systems a small flocculant dose ahead of the filter improves clarity.

5. Integrated panels: small and medium pools can use a pre-mounted panel combining pH and chlorine controllers with pumps; large parks can be zoned by pool and linked to a central system.

6. Records and maintenance: controllers log readings and alarms for daily checks. Sensors need regular calibration and cleaning, and we provide procedures and spare-part recommendations.

Please share pool volume, turnover time, disinfectant type, plant-room layout and pipe sizes so we can define sampling points, injection points and equipment.

Practical notes: chlorine readings depend on pH, so stabilise pH before tuning the chlorine loop. Unstable sample flow causes drift. Store hypochlorite and acid separately and never mix them, as this releases chlorine gas.
